Introduction to Food

“You are what you eat.”

If you eat trash, you become trash. It’s that simple. But what’s not so simple in the modern era of nutrition misinformation is figuring out what’s trash what’s treasure. Even the experts seem to disagree on the basics of food science. However, it wasn’t always this way, and doesn’t have to be. By driving back to the basics, using an evolutionary perspective, using properly set up scientific studies, and most importantly listening to your body, the answers become much clearer.

Food is one of the main pillars of the UpRiver philosophy because it is one of the most important factors in our health. The poor state of most people’s mental and physical health can very often be mainly attributed to poor food choices. As the father of nutrition once said, “Let food be thy medicine.”

The following articles in our food section don’t just prescribe certain foods, they prescribe a framework for looking at foods and determining what works for you. We cover concepts like nutrient density, how and why to use spices, different cooking methods and their impact on nutrient absorption, and how to use different sources of food to build muscle, lose fat, and feel good. We start with basic concepts, and build up from there in a series of articles designed for beginners and more experienced readers alike.
