7. Fluorine

Almost all fluorine in the body is located in bones and teeth and other calcified tissue. It is integrated from saliva into teeth to re-mineralize teeth over time. When fluorine dissolves, it becomes an ion called fluoride. Fluoride supplementation through toothpaste, and water is controversial due to potential links with bone cancer, lowered IQ in children, and other issues. Fluoride is found in all water, and food or other artificial sources are unnecessary.

Quick Facts
-Almost all located in bones and teeth and other calcified tissue
-Integrated from saliva into teeth to re-mineralize teeth over time
-Fluoride supplementation through toothpaste, and water is controversial due to potential links with bone cancer, lowered IQ in children, and other issues [70][71]

RDI
Males 19 – 30 yrs: 4 mg
Females 19 – 30 yrs: 3 mg
[128]

Deficiency
-Can lead to tooth decay and osteoporosis, though some studies disagree [191]
-Supposedly, no disease has been linked to a deficiency in fluoride, and some claim it is a biological toxin that inhibits enzymes

Toxicity
-Fluoride accumulates in the body over time in the bones, pineal gland, and other tissues
-Fluoride accumulation in the pineal gland has been shown to cause earlier onset of puberty and reduced melatonin production
-Can cause kidney damage in children
-Fluoride causes mutations in DNA by damaging chromosomes and interferes with enzymes needed for DNA repair
-Acts as a neurotoxin and exposure to 8ppm of fluoride in water is associated with lower IQs, and may affect IQ at lower levels

Sources
Present in all water sources, no food required [71]. Adding fluoride to drinking water and toothpaste in unnecessary.
